Foot pain is not a fun topic, but we all may benefit by gaining more information when it comes to taking care of our feet. After all, they carry us through this life and it pays to be good to our hardworking feet.
Plantar fasciitis
We have all heard about Plantar Fasciitis and the pain associated with this term,
Plantar means of, related to, or typical of the sole of the foot.
Plantar fascia is the tissue that supports the arch of the foot.
Fasciitis is an inflammation of the arch of the foot, or the fascia, which is the connective tissue surrounding muscles, blood vessels and nerves.
Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is the tissue in the foot utilized during walking and foot movement. Plantar fasciitis can be caused by a number of things, including the wrong type of shoes, foot structure, foot stress and overuse, types of walking surfaces, and even certain diet factors. Heel pain is a main symptom and a tell-tale indicator of plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fascia
The tissue that supports the arch of the foot is called the plantar fascia. When the plantar fascia is inflamed, it can cause heel pain. It is often this inflammation of the plantar fascia which causes the heel pain, rather than heel spurs. If you have weak arches and weakness in the small stabilizing muscles in your feet, it is likely you may suffer from inflammation, or plantar fasciitis. Your plantar tendon gets shortened and inflamed and can eventually develop into tendonitis.
Comfortable shoes are a must
If you suffer from foot pain, the first issue we want to address is footwear. It may be prudent to ditch the open sandals and heels and seek customizable comfort and handmade shoes that not only feel amazing, but also look unique.
At Medieval Moccasins each shoe is made by hand with great care and attention to detail. This attractive alternative to more restrictive styles of footwear is seamless and washable by hand or in your machine. Each shoe is made from a single piece of leather, which is then laced in back and front. Our shoes are designed to hug the foot in comfort and support. By loosening and tightening the laces through the gathered rosette at the toe, the shoes will adjust to each individual foot.
Heel spurs vs. Plantar fasciitis
Heel spurs are calcium deposits that build up on the heel bone and cause bone protrusions on the heel bone. This bony growth that develops on the heel bone is due to constant stress on the foot. Heel spurs are usually associated with plantar fasciitis which occurs when the plantar fascia (the arch of the foot) becomes inflamed. Typically, heel spurs can produce chronic or occasional heel pain. Be aware that these calcium deposits can occur under the sole of the foot, in the back of the heel, or under the heel bone. Even though they don’t always cause symptoms and even may go unnoticed, heel spurs can be detected with X-ray examination by your podiatrist. Symptoms can include pain or tenderness on the bottom of the heel where weight is applied, or a bump that can be felt when the heel area is touched.
Be aware of what is happening to the soles of your feet in all situations. Comfortable shoes are highly recommended for healthy feet, and orthotics can be very beneficial to correct foot pain. It is best to stay away from heels, dress shoes, and many sandals in order to slow down the rate of new micro tears in the plantar and to allow damaged tissues to heal. A neutral shoe is best when using Orthotics. While our shoes are usually able to adjust for wide and swelling feet, we can also completely customize the sole and leather upper to the shape of your foot! We have helped many customers with problem feet, from bunions, plantar fasciitis, disabilities, and more, so everyone can enjoy comfortable, well fitted, and all-day wear shoes.
