In the early 1980s, Ingrid Wendt and Klaus Weiland journeyed from the distant lands of Germany to America. They were enchanted by the warmth and vigor of the American people. After they bore their daughter, Chela Wendt Weiland, in 1981, When I was born in 1981, Ingrid yearned to support her new family while remaining ever-present in their lives. Thus, amidst the vibrant energy of New Orleans, their humble enterprise was born.
In those early days, Ingrid and Klaus set up shop in the bustling French Quarter markets. With no predefined sizes, they crafted each pair of shoes to the exact measurements of the wearer’s feet. This bespoke approach won the hearts of many, and the popularity of their medieval moccasins began to soar.
Growth and Expansion
As time passed and demand for their handcrafted shoes grew, Ingrid realized the need for additional support. She invited her sister-in-law to join as a partner, and together, they refined the patterns and production processes, allowing our shoes to be sold nationwide. By the late 1990s, Medieval Moccasins had flourished to the point where it was sensible to divide into two thriving businesses.
A New Generation
When the time came for Chela to pursue higher education, it was the fruits of our family business that afforded her this opportunity. She knew in her heart that Medieval Moccasins was her destiny. Upon graduating in 2007, she immersed herself fully in the day-to-day operations, working alongside her incredibly industrious mother. Together, they endeavored to extend their reach beyond the Renaissance Festival circuit and into the modern world.
Trials and Tribulations
The year 2013 brought a grievous blow to our family. We lost beloved Ingrid to pancreatic cancer. In the wake of this tragedy, Chela leaned heavily on her father, Klaus, whose talents as a musician were only matched by his strength of character. With the unwavering support of our cherished “Shoe Crew” family, they persevered through those darkest days.
